Poured in Place Rubber
The surface of this and many other playgrounds all over the world are covered in a rubberized safety surfacing. It's a poured-in-place rubber safety surface, usually referred to as PIP. The benefits of PIP are numerous - it's probably the best surface for inclusion because it's a unitary level surfacing making it easier to roll wheels on unlike loose safety surfaces such as mulch or shredded rubber. Its safety factors are unparalled and it's easy to customize with graphics such as this fossil design at a dino-themed park pictured above.
There are many reasons to choose PIP for your new playground but one of our favorites is the aesthetic aspect that it lends to playgrounds. Although it can be more costly up front, the savings over time make quite a difference. PIP is mainly two layers, the bottom cushion layer, the depth of which (from 2"-5") depends upon the critical fall height of your playground equipment topped with the colorful EPDM layer that is usually half an inch thick.
"PIP" (Poured-in-Place) rubber is considered the best choice for playground surfacing because it provides superior safety by offering a consistent, shock-absorbing surface to protect children from falls, is highly accessible for children with mobility aids due to its smooth, level texture, and requires minimal maintenance compared to other materials like loose fill mulch or wood fibers; making it a top choice for inclusive play areas.
